Michael

Captain of the Lord’s House; Prince of the Heavenly Host

If there was ever an angelic popularity contest, it’s likely that Michael Archangel would win. Michael is beloved by Pagans, Jews, Christians, Muslims, and the Unaffiliated. His name means “Who Is Like the Lord”. Statement or question? You decide.

Michael is head of the Lord’s Army. He crushed the Rebel Angels. Legend has it that if Lucifer could only have persuaded Michael to join him, Heaven would have been overthrown.

Michael is the angel of righteousness—h....e does what is right. He cannot be bribed. He is allegedly among the few angels who know the Ineffable Name of Power.

Michael is invoked for protection from anything that frightens you. If you are worried about the safety of loved ones, Michael may be petitioned on their behalf. He accepts petitions from one person on behalf of another. He is the archangel of justice and maybe invoked to provide justice for crimes committed against you. He is the special protector of victims of rape and maybe invoked for protection against sexual abuse.

An old verbal charm invokes Michael’s vigilant protection:

Michael to the right of me,
Michael to the left of me,
Michael above me,
Michael below me,
Michael all around me,
Michael, with your flaming sword,
Of cobalt blue, please protect me

This charm’s power is enhanced by simultaneously visualizing being surrounded by cobalt blue flames emanating from Michael’s sword. Further appeals maybe added at the end of the charm. For an example: Michael, please protect my cat, my dog, my true love and so forth. Be as specific as possible. Name and visualize your desire.

Michael has dominion over fire magic and candle spells. He is the angel of fire safety, also invoked for safety at sea. He is the patron of those suffering from sea sickness or motion sickness. Moroccan folklore suggests that precipitation (rain, snow, hail) falls from a celestial reservoir or sea. Michael presides over this sea. Precipitation only occurs according to his command.

Michael serves as a pyschopomp, escorting dead souls to the next realm and guarding them on their journey. Russian folklore envisions him as a ferryman bringing good souls toward Paradise’s radiant light. Michael guards the gates of Paradise. At the Final Judgment, he will weigh the souls of the dead.

Michael is the Angel of Insomnia, which he both heals and causes. According to Jewish legends, the reason the King Ahasueros couldn’t sleep in the Queen Esther story is because the Creator sent Michael to afflict him with sleeplessness.

Michael makes frequent public appearances -- Apparitions of Michael have been recorded in Mexico, Italy, and France. Most recently in 1995 and 1996. Egyptian Christians and Muslims witnessed numerous apparitions of Michael in the Church of Saint Michael in the village of Kafr Yusuf Samri. He appeared in various forms both with and without wings. Miracles recorded include exorcisms, healings, and multiplication of oil.

Favored People Theoretically, Michael as humanity’s defender is everyone’s guardian, but he is also specifically patron of firefighters, warriors, paratroopers, ambulance drivers, artists, mariners, and law enforcement officers. Judaism, Coptic Christianity, and Roman Catholicism all claim him as special patron. He also favors professionals who utilize scales, including chemists, pharmacists, bakers, and grocers, possibly weight watchers.

Manifestation Michael takes many forms from classical winged angel to a being of brilliant, blinding light to a head of garlic. Garlic contains his essence and is thus more than just a protective amulet; it is an actual manifestation of Michael.

Iconography Michael is frequently portrayed as a winged Roman solider. He is commonly portrayed with a dragon; this is now interpreted as representing his victory over Lucifer, but this image may hark back to the days when Michael was worshipped as a deity in the Babylonia and Persia. He may have once have ridden that dragon.

Attributes Shield, sword, and scales.

Planet
Sun and Mercury

Plant
Angelica archangelica, garlic

Elements
Fire, water

Direction Various directions are attributed to him, usually south or east; the Kabbalah places Michael on the right side (Gabriel is on the left).

Colors Red, silver, and cobalt blue
Dates September 29th, the feast of Michaelmas. Coptic tradition recommends the 12th of each month for requesting protection and help from Michael.

Sacred Sites Michael is the patron saint of France. Mont-....Saint-Michel in Normandy was dedicated to Michael in 708 CE after the archangel appeared to Aubert, Bishop of Avranches, in a series of dreams, ordering him to transform it into a shrine dedicated to him. Pilgrimage to Mont-....Saint-Michel allegedly guarantees smooth passages to the next life. The waters have demonstrated some of the strongest tides on Earth. Mont-....Saint-Michel bears a mystical reputation, sometimes associated with the Grail. It maybe part of an aligned chain of sacred standing stones including Delos, Delphi, and Mount Carmel.

Offerings Frankincense, myrrh, angelica, garlic. In Sicily, he is given sugar and sweet liqueurs.

Seeing The Buddha In All: The Practice Of Pure Perception

Subject: Seeing The Buddha In All: The Practice Of Pure Perception

You are not the only unawakened Buddha or amnesiac saint on the block. Seeing others as Buddhas is taught in Vajrayana practices as the cultivation of pure perception or sacred outlook. Pure perception is about inner vision.

As an example, all you pet lovers might want to think about a dog that you know. The mailman may see that dog as an unholy terror; an allergic relative may see it as a dirty dust ball; a child may see it as a best friend; its owner may see it as an angelic blessing and an oasis of unconditional loyalty and win/win mutuality in his life.

The Dharma teaches us that all beings have Buddha-nature, including that dog. Can you look at that dog and perceive its Buddha-nature? Can you look in the eyes of someone you love and see Buddha-nature? Can you look at someone you fear or someone who has been unkind to you and see Buddha-nature?

The question is how far can any of us extend ourselves toward including one and all in our unconditional loving hearts? Can we love and respect even those whose actions or personalities we don't happen to like? How far can we genuinely extend ourselves to include all in our wishes, thoughts, prayers, and hearts? Can we forgive others and forgive ourselves too? Seeing the Buddha in all is a challenge, but it's also a mirror for clearly seeing into your own heart and soul. This sacred outlook and penetrating spiritual gaze could prove extraordinarily.... revealing.

Energy Is Electrical and Magnetic

By Jan Engels Smith
janenglesmith.com

An energy field surrounds everything. Energy pulses out from objects, interacting with and absorbing other energies. A person’s energy field, commonly called an aura, is generated inside the body and extends outward to surround it. Understanding the electrical and magnetic nature of energy is important to understanding healing.

The energy field you generate is created by your beliefs and thoughts. Like a radio tower, you send out concentric pulses of energy that broaden and weaken as they move farther away. An electromagnetic.. charge exists immediately around your body. This magnetism impacts all it comes in contact with and, by extension, influences the entire universe. Like a strong magnet, your field of energy draws other energies to it and absorbs the power of them. The energies you attract and the ways they are absorbed are influenced by your belief systems. Your beliefs filter and alter other energies as they enter your power source and, in turn, become part of the energy that emanates from you.

This magnetic power draws to you the situations, people, and events that will reinforce whatever it is you believe. If you believe you are a victim, that people constantly exploit you and that you are unlovable, your electromagnetic.. field will be charged with those beliefs and will draw to you circumstances that reinforce this. If you believe you are a divine being, that all doors of opportunity are open to you, that you are loved by yourself and others, and that good things always come your way, then your magnetic energy will draw to you positive life conditions, which reinforce your positive energy.

Take a moment to think about what you really believe and notice what you are drawing into your life. What do you believe about yourself, about God, about money, about your job, about your family, about your friends, and about life in general? Review your beliefs to understand which energies you attract. If you impart negative thoughts to your energy field, you will attract events and people that manifest negative beliefs. Negative energy begets negative experience, which reinforces negative beliefs. Conversely, if you radiate positive beliefs and thoughts, you will draw the situations to you that confirm your beliefs and reinforce your positive life experience.

The advantage of positive thoughts is that they are electrically charged at a higher frequency than negative thoughts. They also extend out farther and with greater strength into the universe. They leave you with a feeling of expansiveness, growth, and lightness. Negative thoughts are dense and heavy, whereas positive thoughts are light and high in vibration. Observe people’s body posture and you can get a sense of how these frequencies affect them physically. People who are self-confident usually hold themselves tall and upright, as though they could lift right off the ground. Their breathing is full and expands the lungs, chest, and abdomen. People with heavy and dense negative energy look as though they are carrying a heavy backpack at all times. Their shoulders are often rounded, their head tilts down, and their breathing is shallow as if there just is not any room for breath in their lungs. They often feel tightness and stress in the upper back and shoulders. The density of negative energy causes the body to collapse inwardly. Healing is the art and science of managing not only these energy fields, but also their root cause.

It is possible to feel the different nature of energies in another person. Try this experiment: Have the person think intense negative thoughts of self-loathing and poor self-worth. Place your hands above their head and try to feel the energy radiating out. You will have the impression of a collapsing, dense aura. Next, help the same person think strong positive thoughts of their importance and self-worth. You can literally feel the difference in the energy as it expands outward with lightness and happiness. When working with someone in this activity, remember to finish on the positive note.

Energy changes with intention, instantaneously.. and powerfully. Changing your electromagnetic.. field of energy is not difficult, nor does it take years of study or practice. It is immediate. You can understand this by simply changing your thoughts and noticing the instant shift in the energy within and around you. Through practice, you can better manage, moment to moment, the energy that surrounds you. Your work in self-discovery, digging deeply into your belief system and scrutinizing your core beliefs, will allow you to permanently intensify the positive energy you radiate and attract. You can project energies that contribute meaningfully to a better universe and a better life for all people.

All objects possess an energy field and radiate and attract energy. Energy can transfer and be shared between objects, creating a bond or magnetism. This energy exchange explains the phenomenon of dowsing rods, which have been used for thousands of years to locate sources of water. They are still used today by power companies, which employ them to locate water mains. This shared transfer and bonding of energy is also what psychics use to find missing objects or people. In the case of a missing person, an article of clothing or jewelry provides an energy source, which connects to the missing person and allows the psychic to determine location. I have done many readings for people by holding a piece of their jewelry and intuitively reading their energy. I have received amazing information about their current condition, past experiences, health, and emotional problems.

Invisible energy is powering your visible experiences and you can control it.

THE WAY TO FREEDOM

It’s so wonderful to know that we are living at a time of great spiritual renaissance. Many are choosing to be about the business of transforming their relationship with Life and to explore new ways of being. Now, as we look at the ancient teachings we have been given, we can gain new understanding of our relationship with God/Source. If we want a balanced life, a happy life, and harmonious loving relationships – it’s good to understand our relationship with God, the Universal Field of Energy in which Sacred Scripture says, ‘we live and move and have our being.’

We are coming to realize that we are more than physical beings. We are also energy beings. In fact each one of us is composed of a system of energy fields which interact with each other and with our environment. The Universe is an immense field of energy and each one of us is an individualizati......on of this Energy field. As individualized energy systems, how we relate to the Universal Energy Field determines the quality of our life experience.

The Toltec Way

What is special about the Toltec way is that the Toltec artist sees his life as a work of art with himself as the artist. The Toltec artist learns that he is dreaming reality and that he is master of his dream. He knows that everything he thinks, every action, every choice and every word he speaks are the tools of his art.

We discover how to refine these tools by not making assumptions, by being impeccable with our word, not taking things personally and always doing our best. We refine the tools in the deliberate use of our energy and by keeping our hearts open in love and acceptance.

So, following the Toltec way we seek complete freedom from fear and we surrender to love and acceptance. We come to embrace life in all its forms and we are filled with joy and gratitude for every moment of our lives. This is becoming an artist of the spirit.

Finding Freedom

The goal of the artist of the spirit is a deepening of our understanding of the human experience that removes all doubt about the nature of reality and the meaning of our existence. Human beings have been seeking outside themselves for the freedom that peace and contentment can bring, but we are finding that what we seek is not outside but within ourselves. As author Guy Finley writes, “Freedom from what is unwanted by you begins with awakening to what is unseen within you.”

On the way to finding this freedom we often resist what Life brings us. Freedom is accepting that what Life brings us is for us. Life always works for us, never against us! This truth can set us free. When we learn to accept and cooperate with what Life wants for us, we begin to experience a new sense of connectedness to Life, to our relationship with God, the Universal Energy Field. Each step we take in the direction of awareness of our spiritual nature brings us into a deeper relationship with the Divine. Life has been calling us to awaken to our true nature and when we answer the call we will experience Universal Intelligence guiding us each step of our way.

Grace

The Toltec masters and the mystics tell us that as we begin to claim our true nature by being about the work of transforming our consciousness, our perception of reality changes and we relate to life in a new way. As we ascend in consciousness we experience the presence of the Divine. As the illusion of a separate self fades, we are now being prepared to receive the miracle of Divine Grace, the highest form of Energy. And what is Grace?

Grace is an energy infused with a spiritual quality that surpasses anything you experience in ordinary consciousness. It’s a gift from the Divine that fills you with a luminous awareness. Its power lifts and inspires: You not only see life from a new perspective, you feel enlivened with new vision and determination. It’s an epiphany, a revelation, like you see or understand something as though for the first time. Grace is the organizing force behind those moments you often describe as “out of the blue”, coincidence, or synchronicity.

It is Grace that lights your path by working through your intuition and guiding the choices you make. The energy of Grace is in constant communication with your soul as the still small voice that wants to be heard and ultimately must be listened to – the gift of the Divine revealed in your consciousness. You have come home to who you really are.

Freedom

When this happens, when you come into this relationship with God, the Universal Field of Energy, you experience a freedom beyond all understanding. Author David Hawkins explains what happens, “All exists effortlessly in its own place, and everything is sequenced in synchronicity. The miraculous is continuous. The details of life mysteriously accommodate themselves spontaneously. The energy of the presence effortlessly accomplishes the seemingly impossible and brings about phenomena which the ordinary world would consider miraculous.”

Thank you for the good you are doing in the world!

In Love,

Revs. Austin and Mary

Mother Ayahuasca versus Bruce Parry

Written by Bruce Parry
Iquitos, Peru

My ayahuasca experience last night was one of the more humbling nights of my life. Remarkably, it seems, my ego decided to take on Mother Ayahuasca in some sort of a battle. Horrified, I watched the whole thing from the sidelines, feeling very annoyed with my ego for putting up such a relentless attack.

Looking back, I suppose it all started long before the ceremony began. I was feeling quite cocky about my preparation for the whole experience. I’d done a lot of research and was preparing to get my inner mindset and the physical setting just right.

The other members of the retreat all seemed very nice and were supportive of us filming this private ceremony. We had all bathed and been ritually doused in fine scented plant extracts and essences earlier in the evening and I had had a chance to interact with the group who had come from all over the world.

Some of the incumbents had been at the retreat for some time and everyone was very complimentary about Percy (the healer) and his brews of the sacred vine. If I was going to undergo such a powerful experience anywhere, this seemed like a good location.

When it came to the ceremony itself, we all had mattresses and pillows and buckets fanned out in a circle in the rotunda hut. Toilets were located to afford easy access in the dark – an essential requirement as it turned out. The ayahuasca brew itself was as thick as molten glass and as acrid as battery acid but everyone took it with due reverence and with only a hint of a grimace until the mouth had been swilled with water.

Much ceremony was put into the occasion and Percy blew smoke everywhere and so used the powerful tobacco plant in addition to the brew. Once we’d all partaken of the brew, the crew left and we all lay down to receive our respective experiences.

I have taken the same active hallucinogenic compound before with the Sanema people of the Orinoco basin, during the filming of an episode of Tribe. In that instance it had been administered through the nose (I’d say snorted but often the snuff was blown up my nose through a hollow tube by one of my tribal chums). This time it was to be taken orally, but only thanks to some quite extraordinary tribal knowledge of human physiology.

The science works like this: Dimethyltriptam..ine (DMT) is an extremely powerful visionary hallucinogen and is found in some plants and trees but it’s completely metabolised if eaten, which just renders it neutral as a psychotropic agent. However, by snorting a dried tree sap residue, the DMT can enter the bloodstream by bypassing the liver’s metabolising enzymes. But whoever thought to try snorting tree sap?

Likewise, some Amazonian tribal groups have somehow discovered that mixing two otherwise foul-tasting and nutritionally deficient plants (a vine and a leaf) will also allow the compound to enter the blood stream. Amazingly, the vine inhibits the metabolizing enzymes allowing the DMT in the leaf to pass through untouched.

Both methods are convoluted to say the least and it remains a mystery how tribes have discovered such involved methods of administration... Some contemporary shamans say that the plants speak to them and give them the knowledge, but most just say that their ancestors taught them.

DMT is almost identical in chemical shape to serotonin and interacts with the same receptors in the brain. Beyond that no one can rightly say with any certainty what really happens. If you follow a rational view you might say that you undertake a journey of inner exploration of the subconscious. Alternatively, you might say that you actually go to a different plane of reality. There is no doubt that for many, taking ayahuasca is a religious experience.

Whatever your school of thought, it is certainly one of the most profound experiences imaginable (or more correctly unimaginable as it is almost defined by its inexplicability..)!

For me, it was at once disappointing, telling and humbling. Sadly it was my self-..confidence that tripped me up. I was feeling confident and so prepared, that as the visual fireworks began in my head, I shuffled to get more comfortable and arrogantly provoked the plant by musing to myself, ‘come on then, let’s see what you’ve got to offer’.

How foolish of me. Almost instantly it all went wrong and I felt a wretched sickness welling up inside. Deep down I knew that what I needed was to relax, remain humble and allow the experience to wash over me, but some inner ego kept piping up and questioning the whole experience.

I’m quite proud of my inquisitiveness.. usually and I like questioning everything and not blindly believing ‘just because’. But what was interesting this time was that I was on the outskirts of my self looking in. My ego was rattling on in its usual way but this time it wasn’t making any sense.

It was almost like background ‘white-noise’, just a clutter of questions for the sake of it. At first I was fascinated by this alternative view of my ego’s insatiable ability to question and disbelieve, but after an hour or so it was becoming a horrible rant. Often there was little reason in the questions. They were questions for the sake of it. For a short while, my rationality had become irrational and I could not shut myself up.

Whenever I was able to let go for a second, my nausea subsided and I was presented with a myriad of spiralling colours and possible wormholes and intriguing places to explore, but as soon as my mind tried to reason with them or think about what they were, they receded to a black and white untuned-..TV-signal and I would feel wretched with sickness again, often reaching for the bucket.

Such expulsions were often quite violent (and noisy) and thankfully followed by a brief respite, but watching from the sidelines as my ego battled with the plant was tough. I even drank more ayahuasca (no small undertaking in the state of my discomfort) in order to give the plant a better advantage to shut me up, but it was to no avail.

Luckily I did have some moments where my voice subsided for a moment and I could explore. These were revealing as well as being a blessed relief. At one time, I met the snake that I’d encountered earlier in the day. She asked me why my initial reaction had been to kill her: “What about me?” she asked. “If you leave me alone and don’t corner me or pester my kids, I’ll leave you alone too. We can get along fine if we respect each other.”

Such excursions were rare and at one stage I felt disappointed with the whole experience, thinking that it wasn’t working for me. I had been hoping to fly though the universe, meet dead people and explore my innermost consciousness.

But then it dawned on me that in actual fact my ayahuasca experience had worked perfectly well. Ayahuasca is not a recreational pastime but a medicine and a spiritual lesson, just as Percy had told me. And my lesson was clear. It was: Bruce - stop thinking you know better than everyone. Yes, you’ve had some great life experiences and you have a respectable insight to some subjects, but you’ve got to deflate that ego of yours, stop thinking of the clever riposte before the other person has even finished talking. Be in the moment and listen, yes listen to others. It’s not about being better than other people and establishing your place in some invisible hierarchy, it’s about sharing this worldly space with others. Occasional experiences are beyond rational thought. They cannot be explained. We live in difficult times and we are in danger of losing our connection to the natural world. Some answers will only come from listening and experiencing the world in its natural state.

It was very humbling and a perfectly timed lesson for my journey.

My first 18 Ayahuasca ceremonies

Intro | Physical arrangements | Subjective experience | My experiences in detail | The Ayahuasqueros

Intro

I spent three months in Peru from mid-January to mid-April 2005 taking part in various Ayahuasca ceremonies. My initial intention was to attend one jungle seminar with Ayahuasca-Wasi to see how I liked the experience and to see whether I felt it was helpful and beneficial to me. In the end I attended three jungle seminars with Ayahuasca-..Wasi, a number of individual ceremonies with the same group in Pisac (near Cusco in the Peruvian highlands) and also two other Ayahuasca ceremonies with other healers -- a total of 18 ceremonies! So, as you may guess, I did find these ceremonies to be very beneficial to me, to say the least ...

For those who know little about Ayahuasca and want a brief introduction, it is a medicine plant, a plant whose name may be translated from Quechua as "Vine of the Soul". It is taken as a brown liquid 'brew', which has a fairly unpleasant bitter taste. The brew is made up of two plant constituents, one of which is the vine. The other constituent plant is required to stop the body disabling the active ingredients in the vine, as I understand it. Some curanderos add other additional medicine plants to the mix, but not the people I worked with.

[...]

So, these are all the ceremonies that I attended in Peru in early 2005:

* 22-Jan-2005, Ayahuasca #1, Puerto Maldonado, with Diego Palma
[Very strong, very far away from human concerns, only brief moments of consciousness, Ganesh's whole court visited me.]

* 21-Mar-2005, Ayahuasca #13, Puerto Maldonado, Diego Palma:
[Different brew, different experience, no more "Ayahuasca World", having to adapt]
* 23-Mar-2005, Ayahuasca #14, Puerto Maldonado, Diego Palma:
[Deep deep purge, very successful ceremony]
* 25-Mar-2005, Ayahuasca #15, Puerto Maldonado, Diego Palma:
[Deep strong purging almost all night, processes complete]
* 28-Mar-2005, visit to Kinsa Ccocha:
[Pushing altitude further, trust, eagles]
* 1-Apr-2005, Ayahuasca #16, Urubamba, Eleana Molina:

The Shamanic Origins of Tai Chi

By Stefan Verstappen

"Only the multi-..disciplined warrior,
the techno-shaman, can scale the walls of ignorance
and shed light over the prevailing darkness.
The warrior spirit must guide this process."

Under the moonlight, in a village somewhere in the Golden Triangle, the Ka-ren Shaman moved slowly and methodically. He was showing us the movements taught him by his Shaman, which had been passed down through the tribe for generations. The Shaman moved strikingly similar to a Tai Chi master.

The Golden Triangle is a roughly drawn geographic area that overlaps the borders of three countries: Myanmar in the west, Laos in the east, and Thailand in the south. This area gets its soubrette from its most profitable export, the golden excretions of the poppy - opium. The terrain of small brown mountains and narrow forested valleys is ideally suited to guerilla tactics. In the past this incomprehensibl..e landscape acted as a barrier against the encroachments of the Burmese, Chinese, and Cambodian empires, allowing the area’s idigeonous hill tribes to maintain their own autonomy.

More recently, the triangle’s remoteness continues to keep much of civilization at bay. Both Buddhist and Christian missionaries have failed to convert but a small number of the people away from their ancient animist beliefs. The Shaman or medicine man still plays an important role in the life of the isolated villages.

In 1987 the author visited with the Ka-ren in one of the more remote areas of the Triangle. There he was fortunate enough to spend an evening with a Shaman and witness his Spirit Dance. It was there that the connection between this tradition and that of the Chinese martial arts seemed to meld.

Tai Chi has often been described and written about as a moving meditation. The purpose of meditation is to alter one’s consciousness in order to achieve a variety of goals from relaxation and healing, to extending one’s lifespan and many believe, developing supernatural abilities. The picture that most often comes to mind when we consider meditation is that of the Yogi, the Buddhist, and the Taoist, sitting cross-legged in a temple. The key ingredients are silence, stillness, and solitude. Contrast this image with one of continually flowing, and sometimes explosive movements of Tai Chi, and it would appear to be the antithesis of the conditions needed for meditation. From where then did this unique concept, the linking of physical movement with an altered state of consciousness, originate?

The five elements and their associated heraldic animals represent an ancient knowledge of how heavenly forces could be manipulated to affect earthly destinies. The central ritual of Taoist magic consists in the ability to call up the forces of these Spirit-..Generals and indicates that the heraldic Animals are indeed the essence of supernatural powers.

The Chinese PauKua, Ong Hean-Tatt

In the older martial arts traditions of China, Burma, the Philippines, and Malaysia, there are systems of self-defense that are based upon the combat movements of either real or mythical animals. The better known styles originated in China and include; Tiger, Leopard, Lion, Crane, Eagle, Phoenix, Snake, Dragon, White Ape, Monkey, and Praying Mantis to name a few. Most of the movements of these styles are more complex and vigorous than their passive cousin Tai Chi, and are thus even further removed from the traditional requirements of silence and stillness. Yet it is in the grand ballet of the animal styles that the connection is closest to the ancient origin of moving meditation. That connection can be seen in the oral traditions.

Every style has its own folklore regarding its origins. Often they are like parables that teach moral and philosophical lessons as well as the style’s origins. But there is also a pattern to many of the tales. The following story is typical of these and contains classic story elements that point to an even older origin

In 15th century China, Wang Lang was a young bully who had studied martial arts from a young age. He would strut and intimidate the locals with displays of Kung Fu, but the older men in the village were unimpressed. “Pah! Who do you think you are?” They would mutter, “Your skills are nothing compared to even a Shaolin novice.” Stinging from such rebukes, Wang vowed to find this Shaolin Temple, and defeat its master. After an arduous journey, Wang reached the Temple and challenged the monks to a duel. Initially the monks ignored him, but day after day Wang issued his challenge and finally the monks accepted. Expecting to duel with the master, Wang was chagrined to find himself faced with the lowest ranking monk. Even more humiliating was his quick defeat at the novice’s hands. Wang sulked off to the nearby mountains where he trained for months. After his confidence was restored, Wang returned to Shaolin and defeated the novice monk that had beaten him earlier. But his next opponent was a senior monk who flounced him effortlessly.

Wang again retreated to the mountains to contemplate his failure. Then one day, while sitting in meditation, Wang was distracted by sounds coming from some bushes nearby. Investigating the source of the commotion he discovered a struggle between a praying mantis and a cicada. As he watched, Wang was fascinated by the mantis's martial techniques. He captured the mantis and kept it in a cage built from sticks. He used a straw to poke and attack the insect in order to study its fighting strategy. Wang incorporated the strategies of the mantis into his martial arts and returned to the Temple. He defeated every one of the monks sent against him. The Abbott finally ordered a stop to the contest conceding victory to Wang. The Abbot was curious about his unique style of fighting and asked Wang how he came about it. Wang told the story of his encounter with the Mantis. Having also learned humility from the insect, Wang Lang became a Shaolin monk and his Praying Mantis style became famous throughout China.

As a parable this tale illustrates three of the most important strategies of warfare; deception, speed, and surprise. There are also the moral lessons: persevering in the face of failure, learning humility, and the benefits of learning to be in harmony with nature.

But from the perspective of cultural anthropology such folktales may contain an ancient memory of an even older tradition, that of the “Vision Quest”. Common to Shamanism, the Vision Quest is a ritual whereby a young warrior first undergoes a period of training after which he sets off alone into the wilderness. He must bear the hardships of isolation while fasting and meditating until he has a vision. The vision usually takes the form of an animal that reveals certain secrets. This animal then becomes the warrior's kindred or guardian spirit and will share his powers with the warrior. For example, if the visionary animal was a fox, the warrior would take on the qualities of cunning, an eagle would bestow far sight, a bear - strength, and so on. Compare the elements of the Vision Quest to the story of Wang Lang: his training and initial defeat, his departure into the wilderness to contemplate his failure, the encounter with the Mantis who reveals secrets of strategy and tactics, and finally, Wang's triumphant return possessed with the powers of the Mantis, as well as a newfound humility.

The conditions that induce these (altered) States include such common experiences as isolation, fatigue, hunger, and rhythmic sound and thus are likely to be re-discovered by different generations and cultures. Since these states may be pleasurable, meaningful, and healing, they are likely to be actively sought and methods of inducing them remembered and transmitted across generations.

The Spirit of Shamanism, Roger Walsh

The folktales of other martial arts styles also follow the same plot. A Tibetan monk by the name of Ordator was wandering alone in the mountains when he encountered a battle between a crane and an ape. Thinking that the spindly and fragile Crane would soon succumb to the superior brawn and strength of the ape he was surprised when the crane defeated the ape. He studied the movements of the crane and learned that evasion, distraction, and attacking the enemy’s weak points was the strategy a smaller person could use to overcome a larger opponent. The crane’s graceful hoping and turning movements became the basis for the White Crane style, now famous throughout China.

In the fifth century BC there is described the ritual whereby the "inspector of the Region' would dress in a bear's skin and accompanied by twelve other attendants each dressed as a different animal, they would perform the "Bear Dance" which was meant to drive away evil spirits.

Bird Deities in China, Waterbury, F.

Tai Chi’s origins folklore also reflect the same pattern. The legendary founder of Tai Chi is said to have been a mountain hermit by the name of Chang San Feng who lived during the Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368). He wandered throughout the mountains and learned secret Taoist breathing techniques that made him nearly immortal (legend has him living well past 200) In addition, he learned Shaolin Temple fighting from other wandering monks.

According to his book, Shamanism: Archaic Techniques of Ecstasy, Eliade recounts that a Shaman must from time to time perform a ritual known as The Spirit Dance. Well known among Native Americans, accounts of this practice also date back 4,000 years in Chinese records. During the Spirit Dance, the Shaman moves in imitation of his animal spirit to call on its powers. It is said that the animal spirit actually takes possession of the Shaman’s body and imbues the Shaman with superhuman strength. This is principle is also mirrored in the martial arts. Performing the movements of Tai Chi is said to generate a spiritual energy – Chi. Like the shaman’s infusion from his animal spirit, Chi also bestows superhuman strength. Could it be that performing the stylized movements of a Tai Chi form, is based on the ancient Shaman’s practice of dancing the spirit?

One day while living on Wu Tang Mountain, Chang heard a hawk [1] screeching and went to see what was happening. What he discovered was a hawk attacking and doing battle with a snake. Although the hawk was stronger, faster, and had superior weapons in the form of a beak and talons, the snake was successful in driving off the hawk’s attacks. The snake's soft and circular movements evaded the hawk’s attacks. Chang realized that by adopting the gentle and yielding aspects of the snake's defense, the soft could neutralize the hard, the weak defeat the strong, and slow overcome the fast, and thus Tai Chi was born.

These myths share a common plot theme with the Vision Quest. Each includes a challenge or test, followed by isolation and hardship, then a revelation in the form of a vision of a wild animal that acts as a catalyst for the transformation of body and mind, finally, each takes on the attributes of the visionary animal.

The Ka-ren belong to the Thai linguistic group whose origins lie in southwest China, possibly Yunnan or Szechwan. In the twelfth century the Mongols drove whole populations in China southwards. The social upheaval this caused helped to bring to an end fabled empires of Pagan and Angkor. The Thai tribes that had been displaced southwards initially settled in the wilderness hill country that bounded these two empires, but when Mongol incursions and civil wars finally destroyed the kingdoms, the Thai came down from the hills and established their own kingdom on the ruins.

But not all the tribes came down from the hills. While their cousins went on to found the Thai kingdom, others chose instead to remain in the uplands living a lifestyle little changed over time. Could the practices of the Ka-ren Shaman be a time capsule of an archaic Chinese martial arts system as it existed a thousand years ago? If so would this mean that the connection between martial arts and Shamanism was closer and much older than we thought?

While there are several similarities between the origins of martial arts systems and the Shamanic tradition of the Vision Quest it does not imply that practicing Tai Chi is a form of spirit possession. What it does suggest is that some of China’s most ancient traditions may be the source, inspiration, or template from which the more refined disciplines such as Tai Chi evolved.

So the next time you go out and practice your Snake Creeps Down, and Crane Opens Wings in the moonlight, know that not only are you continuing a millennia old tradition of martial arts, but a tradition that quite possibly goes back through the mists of prehistory to the dawn of mankind itself.

How to Trigger a Quantum Leap

In All Aspects of Your Life

by Stephen Russell, the 'Barefoot Doctor', Taoist
(note: some of this text is my paraphrasing of the original audio recording. The audio source is here "march 30 barefoot doctor" but this link will only be accessible free until Sunday April 12.)

1st principle: LIVE, MOVE, TALK, BREATHE, THINK from the point 1" below and in from the navel. ..

PLACE YOUR ATTENTION ON THAT POINT. That is the centre of body, ['shaman centre,' hara, 2nd chakra] you become a unified force. When you are a unified force, you become unstoppable.

2: MINDFUL BREATHING ..

Breathing slowly and calmly, drawing the breath in and out in connected breaths as if drawing silk from a cocoon. By smoothing out the breath, it smooths out your thoughts. By slowing down the breath, it slows down your head, the chaotic thoughts.

A technique for energy-..sensitive people, shy people: ..

In a crowded place like an airport or party, [when feeling overwhelmed] rather than go into judgment and cutting one off from others, image being the Buddha [and see everyone else as the Buddha]... Imagine breathing through the thymus gland -- this is your place of innate love. Breathe out rose-gold light that touches everyone... You'll notice how people start smiling...

[you can find the thymus by placing 4 fingers flat starting below the notch at the top centre of chest. Where the pinkie finger is is approximately where the thymus is -the spot may feel sore to press on it - the gland where the heart or "higher heart" chakra connects to.]

When at a party, feeling shy, busy... this technique of breathing through the heart centre changes from your focus on your discomfort to "What can I do to help people? How much love can I give?" You don't have to do anything, you just have to be this loving presence

3: EXPANDING YOUR POSTURE ..

All you have to do is lengthen your spine, imagining a 'hook from the top of your head', and allow your shoulders to widen, hips to widen, to become bigger. (Rolled in shoulders, head down, hips turned inward etc, diminishes your power.)

4: SOFTEN YOUR MUSCLES ..

Become conscious of softening muscles head to toe, allow the bones to hold your muscles for you. (Holding muscles tight without purpose uses chi that could be used in more effective ways.)

5: ALLOW YOURSELF TO SINK ..

Imagine being like a rounded wobble doll and give weight to your base, make all your weight of your head and chest sink into your legs leaving the upper part of the body light and free.

6: DRAW YOUR MIND BACK INTO THE CENTER OF THE BRAIN. ..
(Do this work, rest or play.)
Feel the centre of the brain. How to do this: Follow steps 1-5. Now visualize that inside your skull is a sacred cave, high up on a sacred mountain and that you are a miniature Buddha with your face on it, perfect and glowing gold, sitting on a pile of beautiful, sumptuous pillows. Your back is leaning on the back of the cave, which happens to be the rear wall of your skull. And the void your see between and behind your eyes is infinite space. And as you're gazing out of the mouth of the cave into space into infinity, it puts you in the flow of the Tao. And see yourself there, gazing out into infinity from the centre of your brain.

7: OPENING YOUR HEART ..
(It's important to be grounded first - do steps 1-6 to ground yourself.)
Imagine that the 2 halves of your breastbone slide apart to reveal your heart which is emanating love like a rose-gold vapour. You can do this at the airport, parties, etc, by breathing in/out through the heart, breathing out a rose-gold vapour softening the atmosphere and increasing the miracle flow for everyone.

Do this now, imagine your chest opening up revealing your beautiful heart, gushing forth a stream of love that radiates from you. Visualize becoming greater and greater concentric circles so that it touches everyone in your local area to everyone in your city, province, country, continent, hemisphere and the world, all 7 billion people are being touched by this love.

8: USE YOUR INTELLECT TO PRACTISE AWARENESS OF THE DIVINE PRESENCE. ..

All of us is One Love...
Repeat: The Tao, the great Presence, the God within me, is within everyone and everything forever and ever. And I love this presence within me, within everyone and within everything, with all my heart, all my soul, and with all my mind. And furthermore, the great Presence within me, within everyone, within everything, loves me too with all its heart, all its soul, and all its mind.

Three wishes

And on that note, it's probably a good time to make 3 wishes. Make 1 wish, purely for yourself, something you really really want, as mundane, materialistic, it doesn't matter. Make that wish for you, now, sincerely.

And now make a wish for someone you know who is suffering right now. It doesn't matter who it is, you don't even have to like them, just someone who your mind goes to instinctively. Make a wish for them too, for the alleviation of their suffering in some way.

And when you're ready, make a wish for the entire world, every living person, every living being, whether in a body or not, every sentient being, make a wish from the heart.

And when you've made these heart-filled wishes, very slowly draw yourself back into the everyday waking state, feeling refreshed, re-energized, revitalized, recharged, regenerated, raring and ready to get on with the most exciting phase of your life so far. Because I guarantee, if you follow that carefully, it will trigger a quantum leap in all aspects of your life for the better.

How To Use Your Sleep Time

To Make Quantum Leaps

In Self-..Development

by by Stephen Russell

The raucous victory of this title in the vote attests both to how absurdly busy we must all be, that we feel the need to even use sleep to work on ourselves, and to the courage and majesty of the innate human drive to grow, even during sleep.

In fact there’s no point wasting sleep on random dream-..excursions if you’re feeling impelled to accelerate your progress now. To the contrary, dreamtime is perfect for being at one with your deepest, warrior-self and changing the deeper messages you’re sending to the Tao.

The deepest warrior-self, the immortal witness-bearer within, hangs about your midbrain region – that’s the access point for your local self to gain entry into hyperspace/..quantum real/Tao.

Before sleep, set things up in the context of you heading off on a pilgrimage to see your spiritual master, your guiding presence, or however your mind likes to symbolize primordial wisdom.

Before closing your eyes, press firmly on the tendons leading into each wrist on the soft side of the forearms in line with the little fingers. This is your spirit door and as the name implies, opens you up to the deeper/higher realms.

As you do so, tell yourself, “I am preparing to surrender to my spiritual guide/..master/Tao now, so it can show me whatever it is I need to know to expedite my progress in all senses. And even if my conscious mind remembers little of what happens between now and when I awaken refreshed and re-energized in the morning at [fill in the desired time of awakening here], my subconscious mind is already making full use of the opportunity.” Or words to that effect.

Next relax fully into the sleep position and allow your consciousness to slide backwards in your skull until it’s nestling comfortably in the centre of your brain.

Normally the danger with meditation and pulling the mind back to the midbrain, is the possibility of falling fast asleep.

You’re now using that very danger to actually allow yourself to fall asleep.

However as you do, imagine you’re looking out at the room through the very centre of your forehead.

This may take a couple of nights’ practice but once you get the swing of it, you’ll be able to see the room fairly clearly.

After a few moments your brain will be flooded with a very bright light.

Remind yourself not to wake up to turn off the bedside light, as it really does look as if you’ve left it on by mistake, so bright is the light.

Instead, let the light flood your consciousness and within moments you’ll be lucidly dreaming yourself on a trip to see the master, in which you’ll be given all the information you need and can handle to expedite your progress in all respects.

As I say, this usually requires two or three nights practice to get the hang of, but once you do, you’ll be astonished at what you can get up to.

I learned the entire mirror form of the tai chi long-form by visualizing myself doing before sleep, then using the above to dream myself through it in the presence of a master, and though I'd never done it before in the waking state and it’s one of the hardest things to learn in tai chi, the following morning I woke up and did the whole form through in mirror version flawlessly.

You’ll be able to adapt the above to make similar strides yourself in no time at all.

Increasing Frequency and

Quality of Opportunities

For the most and best opportunities, you have to be in the right place at the right time. And people think that’s a matter of luck. But it isn’t. It’s about changing the way you’re creating reality with your thoughts, something you have totally within your power to do. One of the fundamental metaphysical laws of Taoism, is that by shifting your inner landscape, the outer subsequently, spontaneously shifts by itself. And this woks especially well in this instance.

Simply by telling yourself you’re always in the right place at the right time, thereby instilling a different picture in the subconscious of you and your relationship with external reality, you do start finding yourself feeling that you’re always in the right place at the right time – noticeable because you stop thinking you’re always in the wrong place at the wrong (or right) time – and as that feeling grows, you find you actually always are in the right place at the right time, along with which, or because of which, you also start finding the incidence of opportunities increases, along with the quality of each.

You have to repeat it with feeling a minimum of six times (the minimum number of repetitions required to generate a picture and transmit it to the subconscious), three times a day, morning, afternoon and night:

I am always in the right place at the right time, I am always in the right place at the right time, I am always in the right place at the right time, I am always in the right place at the right time, I am always in the right place at the right time. I am always in the right place at the right time.

I wish you a mega-slew of beautiful opportunities in all aspects of life, today, tonight and right through the weekend.

- Barefoot Doctor

'Drop the Baggage'

music by Deva Premal and Miten

we've got to drop the baggage
we've got to travel light
we've got a long road ahead
and we'll be moving day and night.

we've got to drop the baggage
we've got to let it go
we've got a long road ahead.

some friends of mine
living on this earth
they've got a hunger
for the inner search
got the eyes of a mystic
walking on the path of love.

it's the way of the heart
and it don't come free
living and dying
consciously
we've got the eyes of a mystic
walking on the path of love.

like an arrow
like a warrior's spear
the day's of a
conscious revolution are here.
got the eyes of mystic
walking on the path of love.

i've got no promises,
no guarantees
but it can happen to you
if it happened to me
i've got the eyes of a mystic
walking on the path of love.

i can feel the key to my heart
i can feel my heart
that's what i heard him say
we've got to drop it.

we've got to drop the baggage
we've got to travel light
we've got a long road ahead
and we'll be moving day and night

we've got to drop the baggage
we've go to let it go
we've got a long road ahead.

Passion Blinds the Intellect

Sexual pleasure is an illusion. It is Bhranti Sukha. It is no real happiness at all. It is mere nerve tickling. All worldly pleasures appear as nectar in the beginning. They become poison in the end. Reflect well, O Saumya, my beloved son! Do not be led away by impulses and passion. Nobody has been benefited in this world by this Maya. People weep in the end. Ask any grown-up householder whether he finds even an iota of happiness in this world.

The fly runs towards the fire or lamp thinking that it is a flower and gets burnt up. Even so, the passionate man runs towards a false beautiful form thinking that he can get there the real happiness and gets himself burnt up in the fire of lust.

Just as the silkworm entangles itself in its self-woven cocoon, so also, you have entangled yourself in the meshes of your own desires. Tear the meshes by the knife of dispassion and soar high in the realm of eternal peace on the wings of devotion and knowledge.

A passionate man is a real blind man. Though he may be an intellectual man, he becomes blind when he is under the sway of sexual excitement. His intellect proves to be of no use when he suffers from this kind of blindness. Pitiable is his lot! Satsanga (association with the good), prayer, Japa (recitation of the Lord's name, or a mantra), inquiry and meditation will eradicate this dire disease and bestow on him the eye of wisdom.

There is no sex in the elements. There is mind in the body, which is made up of these elements. There is Kalpana in the mind. And that Kalpana - or desire for lust - is sex desire. If you kill this mind, which is a bundle of desires, you kill lust and everything. Kill that Kalpana. You will have no lust then. You have killed lust.

The sex idea is a mental creation. The whole Maya (cosmic illusion) or Avidya (ignorance of the true nature of reality) is nothing but the body-idea or the sex idea. The whole spiritual Sadhana (practices & disciplines designed to lead to self-..realization) is calculated to destroy this one idea. The extinction of this one idea alone is Moksha! (liberation)
